Animated PFP maker for your own picture
Your avatar with a blink, a nod or a soft glow. Square, 512 px, and built to read at tiny sizes.
Advanced settings
Output: 512×512
An animated PFP is a profile picture that moves, usually a short looping GIF. Upload your selfie, pet or drawn avatar, choose a blink, nod, hair drift, glow or sway, and download a 512 × 512 loop of about one second. On Discord, using an animated avatar requires a Nitro subscription, so check that first.
How it works
- 1
Pick your avatar picture
A selfie, a pet, or a drawn character all work. Choose an image where the face is large and clear, since it will be shown very small.
- 2
Center the face in the square
Drag the crop so the face sits in the middle. Keep eyes and hair well away from the corners, because many apps show avatars as circles.
- 3
Choose a loop and download
Pick one of five motions. Download the GIF, then upload it through your profile settings on the platform you use.
Five animated PFP motions, and which to choose
A profile picture is seen dozens of times a day, often for less than a second. A good animated PFP has to work on the hundredth view, so it should be quiet rather than loud. All five motions here are small and return to the start, with 8 frames at 120 ms each for a loop of 0.96 seconds.
| Motion | What moves | Good for | Reads at small size? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blink | Eyes close once, slowly; the head stays still | Selfies and anime faces | Only with large eyes |
| Nod | One small, relaxed head movement | Characters and selfies | Yes |
| Hair drift | Hair or fur moves as if in a slow breeze | Long hair, fluffy pets | Fairly |
| Glow | A soft rim of light pulses around the subject | Gaming and neon styles | Yes, the most visible |
| Sway | Head tilts slightly left and returns to center | Any portrait | Yes |
Using an animated PFP for Discord
Discord is where most people want a moving avatar, so here is what the official pages actually confirm. Discord's Nitro page lists animated avatars among its perks, and its profile guide says that if you have Nitro, you can upload an animated avatar. Its guide to Nitro describes animated avatars as part of standard Nitro, the tier above Nitro Basic. So a Discord animated PFP needs a paid subscription from Discord. That is separate from anything you pay us.
Without Nitro, you can still upload a picture, but you shouldn't count on it moving. Check your subscription before you spend credits on an animated Discord PFP.
We don't quote a file size cap for Discord avatars, as we couldn't find a current official number. If an upload is refused, try again with fewer frames using the advanced panel, or with a less busy picture, since both reduce the file size.
- Confirm that your account has Nitro.
- Download the GIF from your result.
- Open your profile settings in Discord and change your avatar.
- Preview it at small size, then save.
Design for 40 pixels, not 512
Your animated PFP file is 512 × 512, but in a chat list it may appear around a tenth of that width. That shrinkage is where a good animated PFP often fails. A blink disappears, and a detailed background turns into noise. We deliver the larger size so that it stays sharp on profile popouts and high-density screens, but you should judge it small.
- Fill the square. The head should take up at least half the frame.
- Keep the subject clear of the corners. Many apps crop avatars to a circle, which cuts them off.
- Use strong contrast between subject and background.
- Choose bigger motions for small display: Glow and Nod read better than Blink.
- Test it by shrinking your browser preview, or by viewing it from across the room.
Animated PFP support beyond Discord
Plenty of sites accept a GIF upload and then show only a still frame. Before you pay for anything, check the current rules of the site you have in mind. This is what we were able to confirm, and what we weren't.
| Platform | Status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Discord | Animated avatars are a Nitro perk | Confirm you have Nitro, then upload the GIF |
| Steam | We found no official page covering custom animated avatars | Check Steam's profile editor before you buy credits for an animated Steam PFP |
| Forums and community sites | Varies by site | Try a free version first, and see whether it plays |
A free run is a useful test here. Upload the watermarked result to your platform, confirm that it plays, and only then pay for a clean version.
When your animated PFP doesn't look right
Avatars face their own set of problems, mostly because they get cropped and shrunk. Here is what commonly goes wrong.
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| It doesn't move on the site | The platform shows a still frame, or your plan lacks the feature | Check the platform's rules, such as Nitro on Discord |
| Top of the head is cut off | The circle crop removes the corners | Crop wider so the head sits centered |
| Anime eyes turn odd | Stylized eyes don't follow photo logic | Use Nod, Sway or Glow |
| Motion can't be seen | Blink is too small for a tiny avatar | Switch to Glow or Nod |
| Face changes a little | Each frame is redrawn | Start from a sharper picture |
Whose face, and what it costs
Use your own picture, a pet, or art you have the rights to. Don't use this to pose as another person: real-person face swaps are banned, and a moving avatar of someone else can break a platform's impersonation rules as well.
Your first 3 animated PFP runs are free with no account, and signing up adds 5. Free output has a corner watermark, which a circle crop may trim but which you shouldn't rely on, and it uses standard quality, the lower of two tiers. Credits remove the mark: 1 credit for standard quality, 2 credits for high. The smallest pack is $6.99 for 25 credits, and those credits never expire. Runs that fail or get blocked refund themselves.
Questions
Do I need Nitro for an animated PFP on Discord?
Yes. Discord lists animated avatars as a Nitro perk. You can make the file here without Nitro, but you need the subscription for it to work on your profile.
What size is the animated PFP file?
512 × 512 pixels, with 8 frames at 120 ms. You can also download WebP or MP4 from the same result if a site prefers those.
Can I make an animated PFP from an anime picture?
Yes, if you have the rights to it. Nod, Sway and Glow suit drawn characters best. Characters you don't own may raise copyright issues, so stick to your own art or licensed art.
Can I use it on Steam?
We couldn't confirm from an official Steam page whether custom animated avatars are accepted, so we make no promise. Check your profile editor first.
Why does my avatar look blurry in chat?
The platform scales it down. Fill more of the frame with the face and use a simple background, as fine details won't survive at small size.
