Animated emoji Discord maker
From your own icon to a 128 × 128 GIF that stays under Discord's 256 KiB limit.
Advanced settings
Output: 128×128, transparent background
To make an animated emoji Discord accepts, you need a 128 × 128 image no larger than 256 KiB. Upload an icon or a character here, pick spin, bounce, flash, shake or pulse, and download a GIF sized to those official limits. Each emoji is a loop of 0.8 seconds, and three tries are free.
How it works
- 1
Upload a simple image
An icon, a face or a mascot works best. The shape needs to be recognizable at the size of a word in a sentence.
- 2
Pick a motion
Choose spin, bounce, flash, shake or pulse. We generate at 384 × 384 and scale down by exactly three, which keeps edges tidy.
- 3
Upload to your server
Download the GIF and add it in your server's emoji settings. You need permission to create expressions on that server.
The official limits for an animated emoji Discord accepts
Discord's developer documentation sets two numbers. The emoji image is 128 × 128, and emojis and animated emojis have a maximum file size of 256 KiB. Upload something larger and it fails with an error. Note that a KiB is 1,024 bytes, so the ceiling is 262,144 bytes, a little more than the "256 KB" you may see quoted elsewhere.
Every animated emoji Discord receives from us is built around those two numbers. We draw 8 frames at 384 × 384, shrink them to 128 × 128, and compress until the file fits. If it doesn't fit on the first pass, the encoder reduces the palette step by step, so you never have to do that by hand.
Animated emoji, Discord sticker, or both?
People often mix these up. An animated emoji Discord accepts and a sticker follow different rules. An emoji sits inline with text or as a reaction. A sticker is a larger image sent by itself. If you want a big expressive character, a sticker is the better fit, and our sticker tool handles that.
| Custom emoji | Sticker | |
|---|---|---|
| Image size | 128 × 128 | Exactly 320 × 320 |
| File limit | 256 KiB | 512 KiB |
| Animated formats on this site | GIF, WebP | GIF |
| Length limit | None stated in the emoji docs | 5 seconds |
| Shown | Inline, or as a reaction | On its own in chat |
Five motions for Discord animated emojis
The animated emoji Discord shows in a message plays for 0.8 seconds at the height of a line of text, which leaves room for only one idea. These motions are stronger than the gentle ones on our photo tools, since a tiny movement simply can't be seen at this scale. Think about what the emoji should mean in a conversation, and choose from there.
| Motion | What happens | Use it to say |
|---|---|---|
| Spin | One full turn on the vertical axis | Loading, thinking, party |
| Bounce | A jump with a quick squash on landing | Excited, yes, let's go |
| Flash | Brightens once and returns to normal | Alert, look here |
| Shake | Quick left and right shake | Angry, nervous, no |
| Pulse | Grows slightly and shrinks, like a heartbeat | Love, thanks, alive |
Making an animated emoji Discord users can read
The animated emoji Discord displays in a message is far smaller than its 128 pixel file. The usual mistake is to start with a full photo and expect it to work. Treat your image like a road sign instead.
- Use one shape. A head, an object or a symbol, and nothing else.
- Crop tight. The subject should touch close to the edges of the square.
- Prefer flat colors. Fewer colors also mean a smaller file, so the emoji stays sharper under the limit.
- Add a thick outline. It separates the shape from any theme.
- Skip text. Letters are unreadable at this size and can warp between frames.
- Test on dark and light themes. GIF transparency is all or nothing, so a pale fringe can appear around the edges on a dark theme.
Cute animated Discord emojis usually follow the same recipe: a big round head, two dots for eyes, and a single bouncy motion.
Why an animated emoji upload fails on Discord
An animated emoji Discord refuses usually has one of these problems. Slot counts and Nitro rules can change, so Discord's own settings pages have the final word.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Upload fails with an error | The file is over 256 KiB | Use our file unedited, as re-exporting can add size |
| You can't find the upload option | You lack the permission to create expressions | Ask a server admin |
| No room for a new emoji | The server's emoji slots are full | Remove one, or check the server's Boost level |
| Emoji greyed out or unavailable | The server lost Server Boosts, as Discord's docs note | Restore the Boost level |
| Motion looks jittery | Too much detail for a tiny loop | Pick a simpler image or try Pulse |
| Jagged edge on dark theme | GIF has hard transparency | Use a thick outline in your source image |
Who can use your Discord animated emoji
Making an animated emoji Discord members can use needs no Nitro on this site. Using custom emoji freely is another matter. Discord's Nitro page lists custom and animated emojis among the perks of a subscription, and mentions using custom emoji anywhere. We have not been able to confirm the exact current rule for each plan, so read Discord's own plan details if your server members rely on this.
One more practical note: Discord's server emoji are shared with members, so anything you upload is visible to everyone there. Only upload images you made or have permission to use. Our terms require you to own the rights to your uploads, and famous characters and brand logos usually belong to somebody else.
Making a set of animated emojis for Discord
A server usually wants several emojis, not one. Your first 3 generations are free without an account, and 5 more arrive when you sign up. At 128 pixels a free corner watermark takes up a noticeable share of the image, so treat free runs as tests and plan on credits for anything you really upload.
A paid emoji uses 1 credit at standard quality or 2 at high quality. Since the final file is so small, standard quality is often all you need, so the $6.99 pack of 25 credits can cover a good set. Credits in a pack have no expiry date, and a generation that fails or is blocked refunds itself. Bear in mind that each run draws fresh frames, so emojis in a set may differ slightly in style. Using the same source image helps them match.
Questions
What size does an animated emoji for Discord need to be?
128 × 128 pixels and at most 256 KiB, according to Discord's developer documentation. Our files are made to meet both.
Do I need Nitro to make animated emojis?
No. You can create the GIF here and upload it to a server if you have permission. Discord lists animated emoji use as a Nitro perk, so check its plan details for who can send them.
Should I download GIF or WebP?
Use GIF, the default, for any animated emoji Discord will host on a server. We offer WebP too, for use elsewhere. Discord's documentation says its client shows emoji as WebP, but that describes display rather than upload.
Why does the tool generate at 384 × 384 first?
Drawing larger and shrinking by exactly three gives cleaner edges than drawing at 128 pixels, and it meets the model's minimum size.
Can I make a Discord animated emoji from a photo of my face?
Yes, as long as you crop tightly to the head. Expect to lose fine detail at this size. Bounce and Shake read better than anything subtle.
Can I change the speed?
Yes. The speed slider costs no credits. Changing speed doesn't normally change file size much, because the frames stay the same.
