JPG to GIF without uploading your photos

Your photos stay on your device. Convert one or up to 30 at once, free, and resize as you go.

You can change JPG to GIF on this page without uploading anything: add your photos, choose a size and quality, and save the GIFs. Your browser does the work, so the photos stay private and it costs nothing. Expect fewer colors, because GIF has 256 per frame. Each result is one still frame unless you animate it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add your JPG photos

Select one photo or many. Both .jpg and .jpeg files work, since they are the same format under two names.

  2. 2

Shrink them to the size you need

Phone photos are far bigger than most GIFs should be. Cap the long edge at 1024, 640 or 320 px first, then choose a color level for the whole batch.

  3. 3

    Download, or add motion

Save the GIFs to your device. To turn a photo into a moving GIF, choose "Animate it with AI" and it carries over to the AI tool.

What really happens when you turn JPG to GIF

JPG and GIF were built for opposite jobs. JPG is made for photographs: it throws away detail you are unlikely to notice and keeps full color. GIF stores a limited palette of up to 256 colors for each frame, and it compresses flat areas well. A sunset in JPG has thousands of shades. The JPG to GIF step has to squeeze those into 256.

The converter does that by building a palette for each image and mapping every pixel to its nearest entry, so a smooth gradient can break into visible bands. Fine photographic detail also gives GIF's compression very little to work with, which is why a GIF of a photo often ends up larger than the JPG it came from.

None of this makes the conversion wrong. It means you should convert for a reason, and size the image down first.

Why a local JPG to GIF converter suits personal photos

Photos carry more than pixels. They show your home, your children and your documents, and JPGs from a phone can hold the time and place they were taken. We think a format change shouldn't require handing any of that to a website.

So nothing here is sent anywhere. The converter is a small program that loads with this page and runs in a background thread of your browser. Your JPG to GIF job takes place in memory on your phone or computer, and the result is saved straight back to it. Because the picture is redrawn into a new GIF rather than edited in place, camera details such as GPS location aren't carried across to the new file.

  • No upload, so there is no copy on a server to worry about.
  • No account and no credits are needed.
  • No queue, because the speed depends only on your own device.
  • Batches are fine: add up to 30 photos in one go.

Pick a size before your JPG to GIF conversion

Resizing is the single most useful setting on this page. Phone photos are often thousands of pixels wide, while a GIF is usually viewed in a chat bubble or a small slot on a page. Each pixel you remove is one that doesn't need encoding, so scaling down shrinks the file far more than lowering quality does. It also makes color banding harder to see.

Sizes apply to the long edge of the photo. They are starting points from common use, not platform rules, so if a site states a limit, follow the site.

Which photos survive JPG to GIF best

The fewer gentle gradients a photo has, the better it holds up. Use this as a guide when you choose pictures for JPG to GIF work.

JPG to animated GIF: what one photo can and can't do

If you came here for a JPG to animated GIF tool, here is the short version. A GIF only moves if it holds several different frames, and a single JPG gives only one. A format converter, ours included, can't create frames that were never there.

You have two ways to get movement. If you own a series of photos with identical dimensions, add them together and tick "Combine into one animated GIF". They play in order at the frame time you set, and it all stays on your device. If you have just one photo, our AI tool can draw the extra frames for you. The "Animate it with AI" button appears beside each file after your JPG to GIF conversion finishes, and takes the photo to a choice of motions, such as a blink, a soft smile or a light breeze through hair.

Be aware of the trade-off. That step does send your photo to our servers and on to OpenAI, unlike the local conversion above. The motion is subtle and lasts about a second, and how good it looks depends on the photo. Sharp pictures with one clear subject do best. Your first 3 generations are free, with a small corner watermark on the result.

The local converter ends at a still GIF. Motion is a separate, optional step.

When a JPG to GIF conversion isn't the answer

Three requests come up often where a different route gets you a better result.

  • "I need a smaller photo." Stay in JPG and lower its quality or dimensions. A JPG to GIF conversion rarely helps.
  • "I need a transparent background." JPG has no transparency to preserve, so the background stays solid in the GIF. You need a background removal tool first.
  • "I want to post it on a website." Keep the JPG, or use WebP. Both show photos better than GIF.

Questions

Is the JPG to GIF converter free?

Yes, with no account, credits or watermark. All the processing happens on your own device, so there is nothing for us to charge for.

Do my photos get uploaded?

Not for conversion. They stay in your browser. Your photo is only sent to a server if you choose "Animate it with AI" afterwards.

Why is my GIF larger than my JPG?

JPG is designed to compress photos and GIF isn't, so a JPG to GIF job can grow the file. Reduce the size first, since that shrinks the file more than anything else you can change.

What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

None. They are two file extensions for the same format, and this page accepts both.

Can I convert many photos at once?

Yes. Add them together and the same JPG to GIF settings apply to all. You can add up to 30 at a time, and big batches use a lot of memory, so split them up on older phones.

Can I join several photos into one JPG to GIF animation?

Yes, if they share the same dimensions. Tick the combine option, set a frame time, and they play in order. Crop them to one size first.
